Playin’ Around South Orange is a public art project that highlights both the visual and the performing arts. Pianos transformed into works of art themselves by extraordinary local artists providing unexpected and delightful encounters and encourage active arts engagement in our day to day lives through the spontaneous making of music.

The pianos are installed on the streets throughout South Orange for the public’s enjoyment. We hope that the keys of the pianos are ‘tickled’ every day and that they cause people to smile, or have a moment’s break from their daily routine, giving them an uplifting feeling, and ultimately moving them in some positive way.
Playin’ Around South Orange pianos are located throughout downtown South Orange and at Seton Hall University. The 2018 piano locations are listed below along with the visual artists responsible for the visual art design.
ARTS COUNCIL OF EAST ORANGE Members, Gwendolyn ‘Arri’ Jackson and Irene Pomianowski lead the team (Jae Bianca Jackson, Helena L Branch, Jeffrey ‘Sizzy’ Osborne and Marsha Wilderson) that painted the piano located at the Sloan Street Gazebo
ELINA ROSENBLUM AND VERONIKA HAPCO painted the piano located at Spiotta Park
JESSICA SKULTETY painted the piano located at the Village Service Center
KIRK MAYNARD painted the piano located at Irvington & West Fairview Avenues
BILL BILLEC painted the piano located at Bishop Dougherty University Center on the Seton Hall University Campus
The Playin’ Around South Orange program typically comes to a close coinciding with Seton Hall University Weekend. However, this year the official closing falls on Sunday, October 7th.
To honor each year’s pianos as pieces of art, they are auctioned off and/or donated to benefit SOPAC’s education programming. For more details please contact Linda Beard at (973) 382-1035 .
