Juilliard @ SOPAC: Juilliard Jazz Ensemble
Juilliard Jazz Ensemble, under the leadership of Juilliard alumni Wynton Marsalis, director, and Aaron Flagg, chair and associate director, offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as artist diplomas. The curriculum combines classroom, private studio, and performance ensemble courses with substantial interactions with Jazz masters and multiple off-campus performance opportunities. The department’s programming reflects the Jazz continuum and its American vernacular roots as well as the social and cultural vitality of the music.
The 2018-19 season features the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra in six concerts; Juilliard Jazz Ensembles in nine concerts; and the Juilliard Jazz Artist Diploma Ensemble, comprised of Juilliard Jazz’s most advanced musicians, in two concerts.
Several of this season’s concerts will feature guest vocalists in anticipation of the launch of the new voice master’s degree program to begin in the fall of 2019. Jazz artists Carla Cook, Kurt Elling, Hilary Gardner, Lenora Helm, Carmen Lundy, Dianne Reeves, and Charenée Wade are on the advisory committee, and these artists will be involved in the jazz voice master’s degree program through master classes, guest coachings, or through other roles.
Juilliard Jazz ensembles play more than 50 on- and off-campus performances annually, including international tours as well as performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Blue Note. This season marks a new collaboration with the Zinc Bar, located in Greenwich Village, and includes a piano master class series with pianists Eric Reed and Kenny Barron. International exchanges are an important part of the Juilliard Jazz program. This season the school is hosting a student ensemble from the Torino Conservatory in Italy; Juilliard Jazz’s Artist Diploma Ensemble performed in Brazil; a student ensemble from the Tom Jobim Youth Orchestra in São Paulo performed at Juilliard; and the James Morrison Academy in Mt. Gambier, Australia, and Juilliard Jazz will do a student exchange.
