Don’t miss the finale of this year’s Dance Residency!

The dancers of West Orange High School truly embody Alvin Ailey’s vision. Tonight, they are sharing their achievements from this year’s residency, including ensemble pieces they choreographed with Ailey Teaching Artist Cedric Geene. They personify Ailey’s aspiration of “a culture in which the young are not afraid to take chances, especially in the arts and in dance.”

About Arts Education at SOPAC

SOPAC believes in nurturing the next generation of artists and creative visionaries within our community and beyond.  It runs a robust Arts Education program that includes Strings and Jazz Residency programs that connect students with professional Teaching Artists and instrumentalists and a Dance Residency program that brings instructors from AileyDance Kids and the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater into our public schools.

Additionally, every year, SOPAC hosts the INSPIRED MINDS: Young Artist Exhibition in The Herb + Milly Iris Gallery.  This exhibition celebrates young painters, photographers, sculptors, fashion designers, and fine artists from across Essex County, and gives them the opportunity to to participate in their first professional gallery exhibition from submission, to jury selection, and possibly selling their first piece of art.

SOPAC introduces young elementary and early middle school students to live performance through its School Performance Series.  These live performances on SOPAC’s Mainstage reinforce classroom learning, ignite creativity and help young people develop a lifelong enthusiasm for the arts.

Arts Education programs at SOPAC are supported in part by New Jersey State Council on the Arts, George A. Ohl, Jr. Charitable Trust, Orange Orphan Society, Frank and Lydia Bergen Trust, Hearst Foundations, Citizens Charitable Foundation, and the PSEG Foundation.
