Umoja Dance Company, Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre and Nimbus Dance Works bring the excitement of three different styles of dance to the SOPAC stage in the Triple Threat Dance Showcase. The power and infectious rhythms of African drumming and dance, the elegance and passion of Spanish dance, and the grace and beauty of ballet summon a delight to the senses, and an exceptional evening in the SOPAC theatre.

Dance performances at SOPAC are supported

Triple Threat Dance Showcase

Umoja Dance Company is a multi-cultural company of dancers established in 1993 by Karen L. Love as a vehicle to educate, preserve and present as a communal and spiritual expression of life. Umoja, the Kiswahili word for “Unity” creates a nurturing environment that encourages cross-cultural exchange and celebrates the versatility of the human spirit. Through ongoing research, the company continues to adapt aspects of African culture, aesthetics and values that are paramount to their work. Umoja’s fusion of contemporary modern and West African dance reflects the evolution of movement and spirit.

Through dance, drama and music, Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre’s passionate artistry reveals the many diverse and historical threads that comprise the multicultural fabric of Spanish culture. Both entertaining and educational, the variety of its repertoire runs the artistic gamut of Spanish Flamenco and traditional dances, to Hispanic, Celtic, Moorish cultural influences and beyond. As stated by Tammy LaGorce for The New York Times, Alborada is “awhirl in drama and color.”

“Nimbus Dance Works helps define the American experience,” stated Robert Johnson for the Star-Ledger. The company focuses on the intersection between high-level dance and innovative ways of involving communities and audiences. Nimbus presents performances and programs to diverse audiences locally and on tour: serving present audiences and building future ones. Performers with Nimbus Dance Works are top-tier dance artists drawn from widely recognized companies including Ballet Hispanico, Ailey II, and the Martha Graham Dance Company
