Some people become artists because they seek fortune and
fame. They believe that somehow performing, writing, and producing will bring
them the accolades and acclaim they feel they've been missing. Then there are
the people who have no choice in the matter - artistry has chosen them. Jon B
is one of these rare individuals. He is the consummate artist. Unlike many of
the posers who have attempted to lay claim to his niche, he is an accomplished
musician and a noted songwriter and producer. His is a richly textured body of
music, a testament to one man's love for all things soul.
B's career in music took off right from the start with his
platinum-selling debut Bonafide (1995), which was particularly notable for
"Someone to Love," a duet with Babyface. The track hit No. 5 on the
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts. His follow-up release Cool Relax (1998)
also went platinum, shooting to the Top 5 of the R&B charts on the strength
of the hit singles "They Don't Know," "Are U Still Down,"
and "I Do (Whatcha Say Boo)." Pleasures U Like, his 2001 effort, was
also a runaway success, peaking at No. 3 on the R&B charts and featuring
the love-at-first-club-sighting anthem "Don't Talk."
B's subtle command of the R&B scene has continued
throughout the last decade. Many of his fans considered 2004's Stronger
Everyday his best work to date at the time of its release, and the
self-produced Helpless Romantic (2008) saw B return to his soul roots, honing
his songwriting skills. Last year, B released his latest album, Comfortable
Swag (2012). The disc, which features the singles "Body Language" and
"After the Party," is a journey through what is it to be a family man
in an industry that doesn't celebrate monogamy. "I'm changing with the
times and I am a grown man that knows about love, and I'm not afraid to express
it," B declares. "It's one thing to talk a good game saying you got
swagger, but it's another to make people feel comfortable and inspired ...
that's Comfortable Swagg!"
