Best of the Loft
SOPAC is excited to announce the first ever “Best of the Loft” concert on the SOPAC mainstage! For the first time since the inception of the “In the Loft” series, Mike Griot and Lee May join forces to bring world-class Jazz and Blues musicians to a single stage – for one incredible night.
Hosted by Ty Stephens, the night will include performances by Jazz guitarist Dave Stryker, Brazilian Jazz trumpeter Claudio Roditi, Blues guitarist and singer-songwriter Billy Hector and the American Blues quartet, Michael Hill’s Blues Mob. Come see the Best of the Loft.
Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker fronting his own group (with 27 CDs as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine and Jack McDuff, you know why Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Dave Stryker was once again recently voted one of the top Jazz Guitarists in the 2016 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls. His most recent CD, Eight Track II reached #2 and stayed for 20 weeks on the JazzWeek Radio chart. His previous CD, a tribute to Stanley Turrentine called Messin’ with Mister T (Strikezone Records) reached #1 on JazzWeek Radio chart. Both CDs were picked as Top CDs of the year by Downbeat Magazine.
A unique fusion of Brazilian rhythms tempered by a complete mastery of bebop Jazz makes Claudio Roditi’s music passionate and enlivening—a true pleasure to listen to. Claudio’s artistry and accomplishment was acknowledged in 2009 with a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album. He has worked with Herbie Mann, Charlie Rouse, Paquito D’Rivera and Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra. The Rio-born trumpet and flugelhorn player has been on the U.S. Jazz scene since studying at Berklee College of Music in 1970.
Whether Billy Hector is teasing you with his sultry slide work, picking through delta Blues or flat-out cranking it up and crunching out the electric Blues/Rock on his beloved vintage Fender Stratocaster, his music reflects the true soul and origins of the Blues; always passionate, engaging and dedicated to making the audience move and sweat. Having honed his chops and style through three decades of performances, Hector is critically recognized as one of the hottest and most interesting guitarist/songwriters on the original circuit and has even been called “A New Jersey state treasure” by music writers.
Michael Hill’s Blues Mob has made a name for themselves in the world of Blues. The group demonstrates the passion, desire for freedom, humor and justice that are fundamental to the Blues. Their 1994 debut album, Bloodlines, was awarded Best Debut Album of the Year by Living Blues. Since then, the Michael Hill’s Blues Mob has obtained critical acclaim from audiences worldwide. In 2011, Michael Hill was inducted in the New York Blues Hall of Fame as a Master Blues Artist. Now, he returns to SOPAC for the Best of the Loft concert event with Bill McClellan on drums, Mike Griot on bass and Tony Orbach on saxophone.
