Led by Juilliard alumnus trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, Juilliard Jazz is one of the most exciting and innovative Jazz programs in the country.

Now entering its 18th season, Juilliard Jazz offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the Artist Diploma. This is also the first year of our Jazz Voice master’s degree; we are excited for this long overdue expansion into more of the music’s rich legacy. The curriculum combines classroom, private studio and performance ensemble courses with substantial interactions with Jazz masters and multiple performance opportunities in diverse venues around the city and the world. The repertoire studied covers the entire Jazz continuum, highlights its American vernacular roots and emphasizes the social and cultural vitality of the music.

During the 2019-20 season, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra will perform 9 concerts and Juilliard Jazz Ensembles give 17 performances, while students will also put on solo recitals and perform around the city.

In New York City, the 50 students in Juilliard Jazz present concerts in on- and off-campus venues including Alice Tully Hall, Blue Note Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club and Juilliard’s Paul Recital Hall and Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Juilliard Jazz students enjoy extraordinary opportunities to share their artistry around the U.S. and the world. They have recently performed with the Albany and Princeton symphonies, at festivals in Amsterdam, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Cape Cod, the Cayman Islands and Japan and in clubs in China, Italy, Mexico and Switzerland. In addition to weekly rehearsals with Juilliard faculty, student ensembles will work this year with guest artists such as Scotty Barnhart, Aaron Diehl, Jonathan Finlayson, Jeff Hamilton, Carmen Lundy, Bobby Watson and Dr. Michael White.
