Interactive Performance–Just for Families
Dance, Family
The Dance Theater of Harlem Ensemble is a professional troupe of sixteen young dancers trained at the Dance Theater of Harlem. The school was founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, with the goal of bringing awareness of the ballet and the arts to children in the community. In celebration the school's 40th anniversary, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble embarks on its 2009–2010 national tour, exposing diverse audiences to the art of dance. In this Sunday matinee presentation, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble shares with families and a young audience an interactive peek into the world of ballet.
This special family performance features live piano music and a narrator who takes audience members through the making of a ballet dancer. In addition, audience members will have the chance to ask the dancers questions during the performance and even join them on stage! Carol Anglin of The Louisiana Dance Foundation noted, “Bringing DTH Ensemble here makes it more tangible for local dancers. It instills in the students a hope and dream that this could happen for them.” Everyone from aspiring dancers to those interested in learning more about the art of dance will be impressed by this special performance with an internationally recognized and historically influential dance ensemble.
