Bringing over three decades of musical excellence to their audiences, the West Point Band’s Jazz Knights present the best in big band favorites, popular music, and original compositions and arrangements for jazz ensemble. Past and present members of the band have played with such icons as Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Ahmad Jamal, Chaka Kahn, Prince, Billy Cobham, and the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller Orchestras.

Celebrate the start of spring in Jubilee Hall on March 27 at 5 p.m. by attending the Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series. Listen to Jazz Scholar and Pianist Dr. Keith Waters and renowned saxophonist Dave Liebman and enjoy a Jazz Quartet performance.

The Quartet features the following artists:

Pianist Keith Waters is on the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder. His book, The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68 (Oxford University Press), won the 2011 Jazz Scholarship Award from the Jazz Interest Group of the Society for Music Theory, the “Best of” category from the Jazz Journalists’ Association and New York City Jazz Record, and was a Down Beat magazine Editor’s Pick. As a jazz pianist, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe and in Russia, and has appeared in performance with James Moody, Eddie Harris, Bobby Hutcherson, Sheila Jordan, Buck Hill and Chris Connor. Together with Henry Martin, he is the co-author of Jazz: The First Hundred Years (Cengage/Schirmer), now in its third edition and in use in some 75 colleges and universities across the United States.

Saxophonist Dave Liebman is a legendary figure in jazz, having performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner and others. He was awarded the NEA Masters of Jazz Award for 2011, was the winner of the 2011 Down Beat and Jazz Times Critics’ polls for soprano saxophone and inducted into the French Order of Arts and Letters in 2010. He has authored books and instructional DVDs that are acknowledged as classics in the jazz field; recorded as a leader in styles ranging from classical to rock to free jazz; founded the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ); is a multiple Grammy nominee; was inducted into the International Association of Jazz Educator's Hall of Fame; and was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland). He has been featured on several hundred recordings with over 100 as a leader/co-leader featuring several hundred original compositions.

Bassist Drew Gress performs and records extensively with artists on the cutting edge of contemporary improvised music. Drew can also be heard with the ensembles of John Abercrombie, Ralph Alessi, Tim Berne, Don Byron, Uri Caine, Bill Carrothers, Ravi Coltrane, Marc Copland, Mark Feldman, Fred Hersch, John Hollenbeck, Tony Malaby and John Surman. In an altogether previous musical life, he grounded the performances of Buddy Hackett, Phyllis Diller, Zoot Sims, Cab Calloway and Pia Zadora. His latest project, The Irrational Numbers (Premonition), features Drew’s original compositions for quintet.

Drummer Tony Martucci has performed with many of the leading figures in jazz, including Mose Allison, Gary Burton, Charlie Byrd, Eddie Daniels, George Garzone, Joe Henderson, Fred Hersch, Steve Kessler, The Jose Limon Dance Company, Joe Lovano, James Moody, Don Patterson, Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman, Sonny Stitt, Dave Valentin, Kenny Werner and Glenn Wilson. Tony is also a member of the Russian-American joint venture jazz group "Partners In Time" (formerly known as "Jazznost"). As a leader, his recordings include Earth Tones and Collage.
